{{ $t('Summary') }}

This BMW E46 M3 CSL was delivered new in France in 2003 in the city of Rennes, the car has driven in France from 2003 to 2015. Since 2015 the car has been imported into Belgium, the owner is still the same since the import date. The E46 M3 had 343 hp as standard, but the CSL has 17 hp more. 360 so to speak. That's not a world of difference, but the big difference is in the "L" of CSL: Leichtbau.

{{ $t('History') }}

At the Leichtbau, they started by removing insulation materials, navigation, air conditioning and radio. The last two could still be fitted and many customers did so. Besides these modifications, the electrically operated seats were replaced by simpler ones without electronics. Weight was also saved with a thinner rear window and a number of body parts made from Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). The roof was also replaced with a carbon fibre one.From an engine point of view, there was the 360 bhp 3.2 six in line. That block was also good for 370 Nm of torque, 5 Nm more than the standard e46 M3. The power gain was achieved by fitting a larger air intake with carbon manifold, different camshafts and a modified exhaust system. An SMG II with shifts that last no longer than 0.08 seconds in the most aggressive mode took care of the transmission of the power to the rear wheels. Gears could be changed using the flippers behind the steering wheel or the gear lever. It was also possible to use Launch Control with the CSL. The limiter at 250 kilometres per hour could be removed by the factory. The story goes that this was only possible if a valid racing licence could be shown at the time of purchase, but if you paid enough money to Munich, it was probably not a problem at all. Thanks to the modified body kit, BMW claims there is 50% more downforce at higher speeds. Most recognisable is the tailgate which on the CSL has an integrated spoiler for more downforce. In the interior, a lot has been changed as well, mainly by using a lot of carbon instead of the standard materials. Most striking are the steering wheel covered with alcantara and the sports seats. All of these changes mean that you can sprint to the hundred mark in 4.9 seconds. That the CSL is a truly brilliant car was proven years later when BMW came up with the spiritual successor of the CSL: the BMW E92 M3 GTS. This orange monster (we drove it recently) was only two seconds faster at the Nürburgring, 7:48 for the GTS against 7:50 for the CSL. The gearbox is adjustable in different levels of aggressiveness, but even the softest one is not very relaxing if you want to drive calmly. In the end, 1383 units were produced (excluding some pre-production examples) of which 841 with the steering wheel on the left side, making the CSL a real collector's item. The prices of the M3 CSLs have risen enormously, in one year they have almost doubled and they are still going up. Annoying for the enthusiast, nice for the investors!
